Design for Manufacturability (DFM) Reviews
Design for Manufacturability, or DFM, is the process of reviewing a part or assembly before production to make sure it can be made efficiently, consistently, and at a reasonable cost.
A good DFM review looks beyond whether a design can technically be manufactured. It considers how the part will actually be cut, formed, welded, machined, fixtured, inspected, assembled, and handled on the shop floor.
What Is a DFM Review?

What a DFM Review Looks At
Process Selection — Is the chosen manufacturing process the right fit for the part, quantity, material, and required tolerances?
Tolerances — Are the tolerances tighter than the application actually requires? Unnecessary precision can add significant cost and complexity.
Tooling & Fixturing — Can the part be held, located, welded, machined, or assembled reliably without complicated or expensive tooling?
Material & Geometry — Are the material, thicknesses, bends, radii, hole locations, weld access, and other features practical for the intended process?
Assembly — Can components be located, joined, accessed, and inspected without creating unnecessary difficulty?
Shop-Floor Reality — Does the design make sense for the machines, people, material handling, inspection methods, and production environment that will actually be used?
Why DFM Matters
DFM can help identify problems before material is ordered, tooling is built, or production begins.
Catching those issues early can reduce:
- Rework and scrap
- Difficult setups
- Excessive cycle time
- Unnecessary tooling
- Supplier questions and delays
- Quality problems
- Costly design changes after production starts
When a DFM Review Makes Sense
A DFM review is especially useful when:
- A new part or product is moving toward production
- A part is consistently difficult or expensive to manufacture
- A supplier is struggling to meet the print
- Production volume is increasing
- Tooling or fixturing is becoming complicated
- A design is being moved to a different manufacturing process
- Cost reduction is needed without sacrificing function
